Guide to choosing food for cats and dogs
How to choose the right food for your pet
Choosing the ideal food for your dog or cat is one of the most important decisions for their health and longevity. In this guide, we help you navigate the many options available.
🐶 Dog food
Dry food (kibble)
Kibble is convenient, affordable, and helps keep teeth clean. Always choose products with meat as the first ingredient and avoid those with too many grains or artificial additives.
Wet food (pâté and chunks)
Rich in water, it is ideal for dogs that drink little or have kidney issues. Excellent as a supplement to a dry diet.
How to read the label
- The first ingredient must be an animal protein source (chicken, beef, salmon...)
- Avoid artificial colors, preservatives, and added sugars
- Check the protein, fat, and fiber content
🐱 Cat food
Cats are obligate carnivores
Unlike dogs, cats need animal proteins in high quantities. A diet low in meat can cause serious deficiencies.
Dry vs. wet food
Cats tend to drink little: wet food is essential for preventing kidney and urinary problems. Combining both is ideal.
Ingredients to avoid
- Onions, garlic, and derivatives (toxic to cats)
- Too many carbohydrates and grains
- Preservatives such as BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin
General tips
- Age and size: always choose foods formulated for your pet's life stage (puppy/kitten, adult, senior)
- Health conditions: in case of allergies, being overweight, or medical conditions, consult your veterinarian
- Gradual transition: change food slowly over 7-10 days to avoid digestive issues
